Tri-county area under wildfire disaster declaration

AUSTIN–Henderson, Kaufman and Van Zandt counties are among 143 counties included in a disaster declaration issued Oct. 14 by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott because of an increasing wildfire threat across the state.
The National Weather Service predicts near-record heat through October as well as a warm and dry winter. Upcoming windy conditions will increase the potential for wildfire activity across the state, the Texas Division of Emergency Management said in an Oct. 14 press release about the governor’s declaration.

Henderson County extends disaster declaration

HENDERSON COUNTY–Henderson County Commissioners’ Court voted in a May 31 special session to extend by 30 days the local disaster declaration issued originally by County Judge Wade McKinney following severe weather that ripped through the southeastern part of the county May 23-24.

Henderson County terminates disaster declaration

HENDERSON COUNTY–Sept. 18, Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney terminated the local state of disaster for wildfires that has been in effect since Aug. 22, the county announced on social media.
Henderson County has experienced just two wildfires in the past seven days, and the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) has fallen substantially, the county continued. The KBDI is maintained by Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Texas A&M Forest Service and is used to determine fire potential.

Commissioners approve disaster declaration

HENDERSON COUNTY–Commissioners’ Court of Henderson County approved a July 26 resolution declaring a local state of disaster because of drought and wildfires, which followed the July 21 emergency disaster declaration issued by County Judge Wade McKinney that was valid for up to seven days without commissioners’ court approval.
