MABANK–Vehicles of all types and ages turned out April 15 in downtown Mabank to support a good cause at the 11th Semi-Annual Car, Truck, Motorcycle, Boat and Off-Road Vehicle Show.
The event is headed by Guy New, who owns Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Mabank. “This is the best turnout we’ve had since the grand opening, really,” New said.
All proceeds from the vehicle show go to the nonprofit charity of which New is a director, Feed the Hungry Corp. New also puts on another show in Rowlett at another Dickey’s he owns. This year’s event is April 29.
“We feed anybody that’s hungry in the Cedar Creek Lake and Lake Ray Hubbard a few times a year, and we identify deeper needs in the community,” New said. “We work with First Baptist Church in Rowlett and Mabank, First United Methodist Church of Rowlett and Mabank, and Church of the Nazarene in Athens is a big help.”
New also named Henderson County HELP Center as another local organization that teams with Feed the Hungry and the churches to help people through trying times. Besides food, other needs addressed include finances such as utility bills, rent and car payments, according to New.
“It’s a great turnout today,” said New, who expressed he’s “really happy” with the vehicles that took part in the event and competed for about 50 trophies.
Randy Lagrone of Eustace, who entered his 2006 Nissan 350Z, says that vehicle is now his everyday driver. It was his first time to take part in the show and to help others in the community. “I think it’s excellent,” Lagrone said.
Tammy Purdy of Yantis also was a first-timer at the show, entering a 1966 Mustang. Her husband, James, showed off his 2013 Mustang. Purdy said “it makes me feel great” to contribute toward Feed the Hungry and its efforts.
