The driver of the truck later abandoned the burning trailer along a county road in east Kaufman.

KAUFMAN COUNTY–Approximately nine homes along County Road 151 and 151A near the City of Kaufman were evacuated shortly after noon July 31 as a precaution as three separate fires broke out. Witnesses reported that a vehicle pulling a burning trailer left a path of destruction behind before unlatching and abandoning the burning trailer on a bridge. All three fires are approximately 20% contained as of Sunday evening and there have been no reports of injury and only one of the nine homes suffered damage.
Kaufman County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Howie lifted the evacuation order at approximately 3 p.m. and as firefighters from the City of Kaufman Fire Department and dozens of volunteer firefighters from the Crandall, Kemp, Scurry, Terrell, Mabank and College Mound volunteer fire departments continued to defend the structures in that area.
Additional help from the Texas A&M Forest Service and CareFlight Emergency Medical Services were present at the time.
The fires remain under investigation as the Fire Marshal’s office and local law enforcement are searching for the alleged perpetrator. The burning trailer in question was reportedly unhitched from the lead vehicle pulling it and the suspect has fled the scene.
Although homeowners in the area have been allowed back into their neighborhood, the Office of Emergency Management asks the public to avoid the area on CR 151 and 151A just east of Walmart in Kaufman to allow firefighters necessary access to the area with personnel and equipment.
If you have any information about this crime, please contact Kaufman County Fire Marshal Paul Ayres at (469) 376-4110.
