CEDAR CREEK LAKE—What started as a radio station’s contest for a roof giveaway, evolved into an extreme home makeover for a very deserving woman.
Jenny Sohasky was nominated for a new roof in December by her daughter in the KVNE 89.5 roof giveaway contest. She won that free roof that was provided by ASAP Roofing from Tyler and $2,500 towards repairing her deck. Christian Life Center’s Pastor Barry Boatright said he heard about Sohasky winning the prize from the radio station so he wanted to go to Sohasky’s house and see how he could also assist with her deck. Boatright said the house was in really rough shape with many unfinished projects, which he said, “I couldn’t allow her to live in that.”
Boatright said he asked five to six men from church to take a look at the house with him, one of which worked for Billy Odom Roofing. Once Odom became involved, the rotten deck, and semi attached single wide was demoed in January. “It was just fantastic, it would have taken us months to do it, and they did it in about three hours,” explained Boatright. Meanwhile, Boatright said he got with KVNE and explained what the plan was for Sohasky’s home. He explained that he was going to do an extreme makeover and KVNE donated $6,000 instead of the original $2,500. Boatright said he had already raised $4,500-$5,000 dollars for the project. He also went to Lowes, who had partnered with Boatright on a similar project, and spoke with the store manager Josh Tierney who Boatright said, “did a great job donating and selling items for the project at a great price.” Lowes later donated a HVAC unit for the job after local managers stopped by the job site to see how the project was going.
New subflooring and flooring were added to the home, along with sheetrock, insulation, some new windows, new bathtub and shower unit, closet, fixtures, vanity, and mirrors are just some of the additions to the home. Tape and bedding were also completed along with a lot of painting. Boatright said that Larry Reneau Painting and Custom Homes spent several days on the project painting, adding texture, and priming. Siding was added to the home, by Jason Milligan in Terrell.
Boatright says that so many people worked to make this project happen most working 15 days straight. Boatright stressed how this was a community project that a total of 75 people had a hand in across multiple local companies such as Pinnacle Fence, Billy Odom Roofing, Larry Reneau Painting and Custom Homes, Self Mulching, Renewed Roofing just to name a few.
Many members of the church and community pitched in where they could, buying furniture, decorating and helping any way they could. The house was officially given back to Sohasky March 1 at 1 p.m., and 10 minutes before they handed the house back to Sohasky, the crew was still installing her kitchen counters.
Boatright said of the experience, “it was fun, it was exhausting but to see her face made it worthwhile. It was amazing.” Sohasky’s family has been through quite a bit in the past few years, explained Boatright. “She was definitely a worthwhile person to do this for,” he said.
What started as a smaller project, really grew into an entire home renovation. “It is just amazing what people can do when we work together on a project like this,” Boatright said.
Reneau Custom Homes and Painting told The Monitor, “Reneau Custom Homes and Painting is honored to participate in helping Ms. Sohasky receive her home makeover. What a blessing it is to be a small part of something so incredible.”
