CEDAR CREEK LAKE—Whether you’re looking for a new recipe or have come across hard times and need a helping hand, there are two roadside stands that can help feed the community they serve.
Located at 8538 City Lake Road in Kemp, a roadside food pantry sits at the end of a driveway ready to assist those in need. “It’s really just Jesus not us,” Kemp Community Food Pantry stated. The names behind the pantry wish to remain anonymous. “He put it in our hearts to put the pantry out there when we were going through our own pantry and saw we had a lot of extra non-perishable items from when we were struggling and friends helped us out.” Kemp Community Food Pantry encourages donations and exchanges stating that if it’s Gods will, he will keep it going. They say that anyone can come and get what they need without bringing anything and it’s closed in the evenings to preserve the integrity of the products. The pantry is not regulated and so far, there haven’t been any problems with people taking everything. Two freezers have also been placed next to the pantry with the hope of donations of meat and other frozen foods to fill them. The pantry has graciously accepted generous donations of eggs from Bella Hampton Farm Foundation as well, so they can offer fresh eggs for those in need. The pantry is very clear, “We do not want any recognition for setting up the pantry, it is all thanks to Jesus.” They also shared that they believe the bible says to love your neighbor as yourself, so they are doing just that.
Located at 312 Kalura Way in Tool’s Paradise Bay neighborhood, there is a different type of roadside stand. It’s a roadside recipe stand for visitors to browse and discover new and delicious recipes. The goal of this stand is to help people reconnect with the simple joys of cooking, bringing families back to the heart of the home where meals are made with love and shared together. The stand was created by The Wooden Spoon creator Grace. “We aim to inspire creativity in the kitchen, encourage mindful eating, and create a space where hands-on experiences allow people to rediscover the timeless traditions of home-cooked meals,” says Grace. Grace continued, “The idea behind Roadside Recipes was to create something that could involve people of all ages and become a timeless project that requires hands-on participation. In today’s fast-paced world, I feel that technology and media often push us to streamline tasks making everything more effortless and efficient. With that, I feel we sometimes forget to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. This project is a reminder to take time for the basics, like cooking a homemade meal, and to savor those moments of creativity in the kitchen.”
Visitors to the stand can choose a cookbook or a few to borrow and use in their own kitchens. “Feel free to keep the books as long as you like or return them and pick out something new when you’re ready for different recipe adventure.” Donations of cookbooks are always welcome along with a note or letter marking your favorite recipe to share with others. The stand is open seven days a week from sun up to sun down. The creator of the stand asks that the community be courteous and set a positive example for others. “We kindly ask that you refrain from taking all the books for yourself and respectfully request that you do not take the cart.”
Whether you’re looking for a new recipe adventure or needing a helping hand or perhaps both, there’s a roadside stand to help feed the community.
