Malakoff Tigers claw their way to Area title

The Malakoff Tigers defeated the Winnsboro Red Raiders Nov. 18 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler. 

TYLER–The Malakoff Tigers showed why they are a State title contender with a convincing win over the Winnsboro Red Raiders Nov. 18 at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
The Tigers led 27-10 at halftime before doubling up the score on the Red Raiders on their way to a 55-10 victory.
Malakoff was coming off a 62-0 Bi-district playoff win over Madison while Winnsboro won their Bi-district title over Atlanta, 28-14.
On their first drive of the game, the Red Raiders connected a long pass down field, setting up an early field goal to give Winnsboro a 3-0 lead over Malakoff.
The Tigers would respond on their first offensive play of the night as quarterback Mike Jones connected with Corey Phillips on a short pass with Phillips doing some leg work to get into the end zone to put the Tigers in front, 7-3.
With Winnsboro looking to respond, the Tigers’ defense sprung into action as Parker Poteete tipped the ball, leading to an interception by Austin Massinggill. 
Jones would deliver on a quarterback keep later in the drive to push the Malakoff lead to 14-3.
Dalton Liles ran his way into the end zone to keep the Tigers offensive steamroller moving in the seocnd quarter as Malakoff sailed to victory in the second half, shutting out the Red Raiders in the final 16 minutes of play.
Jason Tennyson would add a 50-yard touchdown run for the Tigers that pushed their lead to 34-10 with Damien Jackson and Jones added two more touchdowns late as Malakoff put their stamp on a strong performance.
The loss knocks Winnsboro out of the playoffs, ending their season at 10-2.
The win moves Malakoff to 11-1 for the season and locks up Bi-district and Area titles.
Malakoff looks to continue their push for a State title with a Black Friday showdown with the West Trojans (11-1), who is coming off an 27-14 Area win over Mount Vernon. The Regional quarterfinal will take place at CNB&T Stadium in Coriscana at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 25.
The Grandview Zebras take on the Pottsboro Cardinals in the Regional quarterfinals. A win for both the Tigers and the Zebras would set up a 2018 State title rematch in the semifinals.
