Mayor announces intent to resign
Proclaims April Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month
GUN BARREL CITY–Gun Barrel City Mayor David Skains announced his intent to resign at the end of the public comments portion of the regular meeting March 30.
“I will have been married 50 years this October and I promised my wife we would spend our fiftieth anniversary traveling throughout this country and other countries. I was planning on waiting until my term was over. However due to a couple of recent health scares, I will be resigning after the election. I am announcing tonight because I don’t want anyone to think I am resigning because I am unhappy with the outcome of the election.” Skains said and detailed a few traveling plans he and his wife wanted to do while they were “still young enough and still healthy enough to enjoy it.”
The mayor also read a proclamation making April Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention month. Skains read some sobering Henderson County statistics in the proclamation, including:
• 1,137 confirmed victims with Child Protective Services/Investigations
• 89 children removed from their homes
• 4 children died as a result of abuse or neglect
• 260 children served with a Court Appointed Special Advocate, (CASA), of Trinity Valley
• 469 children received services at Maggie’s House Child Advocacy Center
Calling it a community problem, he urged residents to become aware and involved in preventing child abuse.
