MABANK‑Mabank Police Department (MPD) responded to the 17000 block of eastbound U.S. Highway 175 in reference to a vehicle crash Feb. 1 at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to a department release.
The deceased occupant was later identified as Bradley Michael Leonard, 68, stated the MPD release. The Monitor confirmed that Leonard was a Fort Worth-based cardiologist, according to Advanced Heart Care Director of Clinical Operations Ashley Butler, who is based in Plano.
The MPD release says officers arrived and began to interview several witnesses that stated a vehicle left the roadway from eastbound U.S. Highway 175 and crashed into the bridge embankment. The witnesses stated that after the vehicle crashed into the embankment, it became submerged under the water of Cedar Creek Lake, the release said.
Mabank Police Department said officers learned the information and quickly attempted to extract the occupant from the submerged vehicle by entering the water.
The department says officers realized that a rescue was not likely due to the position of the vehicle in the water and damage sustained during the crash. The vehicle was pulled from the water, and officers located a single male occupant who was deceased inside the vehicle, the release says.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and will be made available upon its conclusion. according to MPD.
The Mabank Police Department says it extends its “sincerest condolences to the family of [Dr.] Leonard.”
