ATHENS–The search continues for a missing man from Athens. Rock Stanley, 75, is an experienced hiker who has made the hike on Mount Charleston in Las Vegas, Nev. for the past 30 years.
Stanley, a retired U.S. Marine and high school coach, set out on his trek Aug. 23 and hasn’t been seen since. Red Rock Search and Rescue (RRSAR) began Aug. 28 with a boots-on-the-ground search followed by two air searches by the Civil Air Patrol.
RRSAR Deputy Commander Ken Malin, says 75 volunteers have responded to the searches since beginning Aug. 24. “Mount Charleston is unforgiving, they have a lot of trails out there which are safe and negotiable to navigate but unfortunately if you go off trail it becomes a different story out there,” Malin told Fox 5 Vegas.
Stanley normally hikes with a partner but this time opted to hike solo. Other hikers, who noticed him said that he was asking people, “Where are we? Where are you?” They said he seemed confused and noticed his legs were shaking. Stanley recently started a new medication, which Rangers say could have affected him due to the change in elevation.
Stanley and his wife Karen had been staying at The Retreat at Mount Charleston. When Stanley didn’t return from his hike Aug. 23, Karen reported him missing. Stanley sent a text to his son the night of Aug. 23 saying he was lost in the woods and trying to backtrack. Family was able to reach him early in the morning Aug. 24 when he stated he was trying to get some help.
“I haven’t slept well since I found out he was missing. I just can’t believe it,” says Stanley’s first cousin JoAnn Summerall. Summerall told The Monitor Aug. 30, that they had a nice family get-together at the beginning of August. “He sat right next to me and we had a great conversation. I can’t believe this is happening.”
As of Sept. 5 Stanley has not been located. Search dogs were able to track his scent but difficult terrain prevented searching further than the Mummy Springs and North Loop junction. “The dogs were wanting to head towards Mummy Springs and this is around where the last unconfirmed sighting of him was,” says Rock’s granddaughter Courtney Stanley.
Three organizations have been enlisted in the search for Rock. “We continue to support and are grateful for the volunteers of RRSAR,” says Courtney. “I will update if they find anything,” she stated in a Facebook group dedicated to her missing grandfather.
Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the Las Vegas Police Department at (702) 828-3111.
