HENDERSON COUNTY—According to a press release provided by Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse, the Henderson County Crimes Against Children Task Force received information in reference to child pornography being shared on the internet. The task force began an investigation and was able to identify Cody Burris who was a Eustace Police Officer to be the suspect of the investigation.
The task force learned through the investigation that Burris had gained some images while on duty through an online application.
According to the release, investigators met with Eustace City officials who were very willing to assist with the investigation and learned that Burris was reporting for duty to the police department Dec. 28. When Burris arrived at work, he was met by task force investigators who made contact with him in reference to this investigation. Burris’ cell phone was seized to be analyzed.
Investigators also executed a search warrant at Burris’ residence in Tyler which was issued by Smith County District Judge Reeves Jackson and obtained data devices at the residence to be analyzed.
Henderson County District Judge Scott McKee issued an arrest warrant for Burris and he was arrested and transported to the Henderson County Jail Dec. 28 for possession or promotion of child pornography.
Burris was arraigned Dec. 29 by Henderson County Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 Tanya Norris setting bail for Burris at $75,000.
Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse stated in the release that Dec. 31 the Crimes Against Children Task Force Investigator Timothy Tanner presented Judge McKee with four more affidavits for possession or promotion of child pornography. Judge McKee issued four additional arrest warrants for the four new offenses, which will be added to Burris’ charges. Burris was arraigned for the four new charges Jan. 1.
Eustace Mayor Dustin Shelton stated that Burris resigned immediately following his arrest. “The City of Eustace and the Eustace Police Department are members of the Task Force and are fully cooperating and assisting with the investigation as needed. To wear a badge for the Eustace Police Department is a position of public trust. We want to thank the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and Crimes Against Children Task Force for their work on this case,” Shelton stated in a press release.
Hillhouse stated, “This is an ongoing investigation which was led by the Henderson County Crimes Against Children Task Force and assisted by the City of Eustace, the Henderson County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Rangers.”
