The return of Cedar Creek Plowboys
Historic honky-tonk reopens under Figueroa leadership, promising jobs, music and a renewed gathering place
SEVEN POINTS–A landmark of Texas honky-tonk culture is preparing for a second act. The Cedar Creek Plowboys Club, once famous for its live music, dance floor and a starring role in the Academy Award-winning film “Tender Mercie,” will reopen this fall under the direction of Greg and Caroline Figueroa.
The couple, whose experience in food and hospitality includes Fig’s Steak House and Fig’s Backyard in Tool, purchased the former Cedar Creek Brewery property at 336 E. Cedar Creek Parkway. Their plan is to honor the club’s legacy while giving the region a fresh destination for dining, dancing, and live entertainment.
“We’re honored to bring back a place that means so much to this community,” Greg Figueroa said. “Plowboys will once again be a place to share good food, enjoy live music and make lasting memories.”
A Landmark with a Story
In the 1970s and early 1980s, Seven Points was known throughout East Texas for its lively honky-tonks. The Plowboys Club was a centerpiece of that scene and gained national recognition when Hollywood filmed “Tender Mercies” there in 1982–83. Robert Duvall’s portrayal of Mac Sledge won an Oscar and the venue became part of Texas film and cultural history.
What’s New Inside Plowboys
The Figueroas’ plan brings the venue back as both a restaurant and a music hall, with a focus on year-round activity:
• Phase One — Plowboys Food & Honky Tonk.
Opening Friday, Oct. 24 the first phase features a Louisiana-inspired menu that reflects the Figueroas’ New Orleans roots.
Highlights include:
• A large indoor dance floor with a live-music stage.
• A 22-seat bar.
• 90 indoor dining seats and 128 patio seats.
• 16 craft beers on tap and signature New Orleans cocktails such as the Hurricane.
• Weekend bar service until midnight.
• Phase Two — Plowboys Live Outdoor Music Venue.
Scheduled to open by March 1, 2026, the nearly one-acre outdoor area will become a seasonal concert site for headline acts and tribute bands, with capacity for about 1,200 guests
“We are especially excited to create new job opportunities in the lake area and to give the community another gathering place where families and friends can celebrate together,” Greg and Caroline Figueroa said. “As many here, we were sad to see the brewery close, but we believe that new beginnings with a nod to the past can help the community look forward, dancing toward a brighter future.”
Community Impact.
Henderson County’s permanent population of roughly 82,000 grows by an estimated 45,000 on weekends as second-home owners and visitors arrive. Local officials say the return of Plowboys is likely to strengthen the region’s economy by creating jobs, drawing visitors and reviving Seven Points’ reputation as a lakeside entertainment center.
A Local Leader.
Greg Figueroa brings experience in both business and public service.
He helped build Melinda’s Hot Sauce into a nationally recognized brand and serves as president of Henderson County United Way, a city councilman in Tool, a member of the Henderson County Appraisal District board and is currently a candidate for mayor of Tool.
Residents say his approach to the Plowboys project reflects the same focus he has shown in public service: practical investment aimed at local benefit.
The grand reopening of the Cedar Creek Plowboys Club is set for Friday, Oct. 24.
