EUSTACE–The Eustace Lady Bulldogs had little trouble with Winona Sept. 13, winning in straight sets in their district opener, which happened during homecoming.
Eustace ran out to a 3-0 first-set advantage behind two Brylee Altman aces. Adalyn Diaz DeLeon piled on two more aces for a 6-1 Eustace lead, prompting a Winona timeout.
The aces continued by Bryleigh Powers, with Eustace ahead 13-3. Aurora Powell had a kill, and coupled with another Powers ace, the Lady Bulldogs were in control at 17-3. Altman had three kills during a run that put it at 21-4. Eventually, Eustace seized the first set at 25-6 on a Skyler Skinner kill.
In the second set, Eustace went up 5-2 on two DeLeon aces. Winona got to within 6-5, but another Eustace run that featured two Altman kills and an Altman ace made it 13-8, Lady Bulldogs.
Winona rallied yet again to reach within 15-11 before a Skinner kill, an Autumn Pugh kill and a Madilyn Andrews kill and ace highlighted a charge to 22-13, Eustace. Two consecutive Sarah Ross kills ended the second set in Eustace’s favor, 25-13.
Winona led 6-4 to start the third set. Sheyenne Powell tied it at 7 with an ace, then Andrews pushed Eustace ahead 8-7 on a kill. Andrews racked up kills to make it 9-7 and 11-8, respectively. A Powell kill increased the Lady Bulldog lead to 13-8, and Winona stopped play with a timeout at 14-8.
An Andrews ace, a Powers point, a Powell kill and a Katelyn Landwermeyer ace had Winona on the ropes at 20-10. Altman’s ace finished them off at 25-12.
