Driver charged with manslaughter in wreck

A truck driver was charged with multiple counts of manslaughter in a wreck that killed five people, shutting down both sides of Interstate 20 near Terrell June 28.
TERRELL–A truck driver has been charged with multiple counts of manslaughter after a deadly crash on I-20 that killed six people June 28.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Alexis Gonzalez-Companioni fell asleep at the wheel, causing his semi-truck to plow into stopped traffic on the highway, causing a chain reaction.
Texas DPS said Gonzalez-Companioni’s truck collided with a Ford F-150, killing all five people inside the vehicle. The fifth occupant of the vehicle was airlifted in critical condition, later passed from his injuries.
The crash caused a chain reaction that involved a total of seven vehicles, killing the driver of another vehicle as well.
According to the Elmo Fire Department, they responded to the crash and requested aid from Terrell Volunteer Fire Department, Terrell Fire Department, additional EMS services, multiple ambulances, an EMS supervisor, and CareFlite.
The scene also closed both sides of Interstate 20 by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office as well as Van Zandt County and Wills Point personnel as well.
The College Mound Fire Department also responded with personnel and their rehab unit.
Gonzalez-Companioni is facing multiple counts of manslaughter.
He is currently being held at Kaufman County Jail on $1.5 million bond for the multiple counts.
