KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats took control in the second half of Sept. 26’s homecoming game against the Scurry-Rosser Wildcats, taking a 14-7 halftime advantage and turning it into a 33-14 victory.
Kerens’ only loss of the 2025 season under second-year coach Brent Watkins came in their season opener Aug. 28 against Bremond, which is ranked No. 3 in the state for Class 2A, Division II by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in conjunction with The Associated Press.
The Bobcats didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard. D’Mari Payne ran 53 yards for a touchdown about two minutes into the game, giving Kerens a 7-0 lead. Scurry-Rosser went for fourth down on their next possession, from their own 43-yard line, but Kayleb Henry sacked the Wildcat quarterback back at Scurry’s own 32-yard line.
However, on the next play, the Wildcats recovered a Kerens fumble. That drive ended, though, with the Kerens defense stopping Scurry-Rosser on fourth-and-4 late in the first quarter.
Then, the Kerens offense struck again. Jachi Rooks made a 59-yard touchdown reception with 9:13 remaining in the second quarter, increasing the Bobcat lead to 14-0 after the extra point. Later, a short Kerens punt allowed Scurry-Rosser’s offense to set up shop on the Bobcat 25-yard line, and eventually, the Wildcats scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 2:27 left in the first half to cut Kerens lead in half.
In the second half, the Kerens offense converted a fourth-and-7 play from Scurry-Rosser’s 29-yard line (moving to the 20) with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter. Then, with 1:25 left in the third quarter, Bobcat quarterback Isaiah Jordan scored on an 8-yard quarterback keeper to increase Kerens’ lead to 21-7.
Early in the fourth quarter, Payne ran 66 yards up the gut for a touchdown, crossing the goal line with 11:30 remaining in the game. The Kerens extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving the score at 27-7 in favor of the Bobcats.
Not long after that (with 11;19 left on the clock), Rooks grabbed an interception at Scurry-Rosser’s 34-yard line, stopping a Wildcat scoring opportunity. Later still, Rooks caught a 53-yard touchdown pass with 3:24 left in the fourth quarter. The extra-point attempt failed, but Kerens was well ahead at 33-7.
Scurry-Rosser tacked on one more touchdown with 1:57 left in the game, when the Wildcats’ backup quarterback threw a 5-yard touchdown pass. That accounted for the 33-14 final.
Kerens has a bye week Oct. 3 then returns to action Oct. 10 at Cross Roads.
