MABANK–The Mabank City Council met Oct. 4 and approved the final general budget as well as the Water and Sewer budget for Oct. 2022 through Sept. 2023.
The general fund budget shows an expected income of $6,106,817 and total expenses of $4,556,970. The water and sewer budget shows total income of $4,677,500 and budgeted expenses of $3,735,059.
Council members also voted to increase water and sewer fees and permit rates in the city. The base rate for water remains the same for both in city and outside but usage rates have increased. In city residential rates are now $3.84 per 1,000 gallons up to 10,000, $4.14 per 1,000 gallons up to 20,000 and $4.42 per 1,000 gallons above 20,001 gallons usage. Outside the city limits, residents will pay $4.42 per 1,000 up to 10,000, $4.69 per 1,000 gallons up to 20,000 gallons and $4.97per 1,000 gallons above 20,001 gallons usage.
Council members also heard from area lawyer Mike Groom, representing the Rotary Club of Cedar Creek Lake with a proclamation making Oct. 24 World Polio Day in the city. Groom informed the group that Rotary International has been involved in the fight to eradicate the disease since 1988 and has spent $2.4 billion to inoculate children around the world. Polio eradication is currently at 99.9%, but since cases have now been reported in London and New York as well as in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it is still crucial that awareness is brought to the public about this disease. The proclamation was approved and signed.
The second proclamation underscores a long tradition of the First Presbyterian Church of Mabank holding a craft and jelly/jam sale in November, along with selling stew on election day. This year Nov. 8 marks Election Day and stew will be available for takeout from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the sale, now called “Holly Days Sale” will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10- Saturday, Nov.12.
In other business, council members:
• Approved a preliminary plat for Spring Creek Phase V for 23 lots, including reclaiming land from the flood plain.
• Reviewed and approved preliminary plat for Lighthouse Landing Phase III.
• Approved resolution accepting shield grant in the amount of $89,000 which will provide for bullet resistant shields for the police department.
• Approved holidays for fiscal year 2022-23 to include Good Friday.
• Heard staff reports.
