KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats boys’ basketball team fell 46-41 to the Cayuga Wildcats on Senior Night Feb. 10, making qualifying for the playoffs more difficult for Kerens.
Cayuga had defeated Frankston Feb. 7, giving the Wildcats a tighter grip on the fourth and final playoff spot from District 19-2A. After the Feb. 10 Kerens loss to Cayuga, the Bobcats needed Cross Roads to defeat the Wildcats Feb. 14 to stay alive for the postseason.
Muziq Gunnell of Kerens scored the game’s first basket, followed by an 11-0 Cayuga run. Gunnell and Lane Lynch sank successive three-pointers to get the Bobcats back within 11-8 at the end of the first period.
A Gunnell steal and bucket halfway through the second period put Kerens ahead 16-15. Next, Nehemiah Massey scored two buckets to extend the Kerens lead to 20-15. Later, James Easley rebounded his own miss and put the ball in the hoop for a 22-18 Kerens advantage.
After leading 22-20 at halftime, Kerens fell behind twice in the third period but led 36-33 entering the fourth period. Cayuga took a 42-37 lead late in the game, after which Gunnell swished a three-pointer and later added a free throw, which got Kerens within 42-41. Cayuga then came up with a basket and two free throws late in the game to put the contest out of reach.
Gunnell led Kerens with 18 points, followed by Easley’s seven points. Massey and Lynch scored six points each. Bobby Williams and Isaiah Carter contributed two points apiece.
