Kerens notches two straight sweeps

KERENS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats softball team continued its quest for the playoffs by winning four consecutive district games against the Cayuga Lady Wildcats and LaPoynor Lady Flyers.
During their first game against Cayuga, played March 28, Kerens scored nine runs in the last two innings to win 17-3. Madison Brumit led Kerens with five RBIs on three hits, including a double and home run. Brooke Sikes drove in three runs and Rylee Spivey had two RBIs. Spivey also pitched, striking out nine Lady Wildcat batters.
For the second Cayuga game, played March 31, Sikes drove in three runs and hit a double and triple during Kerens’ 12-2 victory. Kayla Gonzales and Olivia Holt each had two RBIs. Ella Engel pitched a complete game in the five-inning run-ruled contest.
Kerens next played LaPoynor in an April 4 doubleheader. The Lady ‘Cats won the first game 9-3, fueled by a four-run fifth inning. Spivey allowed one LaPoynor hit while striking out 15 Lady Flyers. Gonzales drove in two runs and doubled. Engel had two hits in three at-bats.
Kerens clinched the doubleheader sweep by beating the Lady Flyers 7-2 in the second game. After opening their half of the first inning with a run, the Lady ‘Cats added two runs in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings. Sikes drove in two runs while Blair Blue picked up three hits, featuring a triple. Blue also drove in a run, as did Olivia Holt, Raygan Brooks, Emma Combs and Brumit.
Engel pitched the first five innings of game two, striking out six LaPoynor batters. Spivey finished the game’s last two innings, striking out five more Lady Flyers.
