KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats scored three second-half touchdowns on Senior Night to beat Cross Roads Nov. 3, 20-8, clinching the final playoff spot in District 7-2A at 3-3 and advancing to play the Crawford Pirates Nov. 11 in the Bi-District round of the postseason.
Cross Roads took an 8-0 halftime lead starting with a Bub Latham seven-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds left in the first half. Afterward, Graham Story crashed across the goal line for a two-point conversion run.
Early in the game, both teams’ offenses stalled on fourth-down conversion attempts deep in the opposing team’s territory. After Cross Roads’ unsuccessful fourth-down attempt, Kerens fumbled the ball back two plays later, recovered by Cross Roads’ Story in the Kerens end zone. Cross Roads attempted a 39-yard field goal but the snap was bobbled.
Later, Cross Roads fumbled on a second-quarter drive, with Kerens’ James Easley recovering the ball. Soon after, a Kerens pass was intercepted by Riley Brown at the Kerens 25-yard line and brought back to near midfield.  That set up Latham’s Cross Roads touchdown.
The Kerens offense got on track in the second half, with Nehemiah Massey running 12 yards for a touchdown with 10:16 left in the third quarter, bringing Kerens within 8-6. The two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.
Late in the third quarter, Kerens quarterback Lane Lynch found Mykel Lattimore for a 59-yard pass to the Cross Roads one-yard line. Massey ran for a touchdown on the next play and added a two-point conversion scamper to give Kerens a 14-8 lead.
Massey scored his third touchdown with 8:35 left in the game, this time from eight yards out. The extra-point attempt failed.
Muziq Gunnell of Kerens intercepted a Cross Roads pass in the end zone with 3:04 left in the game to secure Kerens’ 20-8 win.
