KEMP–The Kemp Lady Yellowjackets varsity basketball team completed an impressive comeback in their win over the Bland Lady Tigers Nov. 22.
Kemp wrapped up the Thanksgiving break with a home win over Bland as they stormed back in the second half to win 36-35.
After jumping out to 5-0 lead courtesy of two free throws by Allie Pringle and a three-pointer from Tenilee Anthony, the Lady Tigers began to pounce on Kemp’s mistakes.
Bland rattled off 12 unanswered points to take a 12-5 lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter began with a three-pointer from Danica Barnett to trim the deficit to 12-8.
A 9-0 run by Bland swung things back in the Lady Tigers’ direction as they led 21-8, forcing a Kemp timeout.
Courtney Hamilton and Liberti Tally added late free throws for Kemp but the Lady ’Jackets trailed 24-10 at halftime, needing a big change to come back against a tough Bland squad.
Kemp began quickly in the third quarter as Anthony added a layup, followed by a three-pointer from Emma Bailey and two free throws from Tally made things interesting as Kemp trailed 24-17.
Another three pointer from Bailey cut the deficit to two as Kemp trailed just 26-24 late in the third quarter.
Anthony finished off an and-1 late in the third quarter as the Lady ’Jackets trailed 32-29 entering the fourth quarter.
A jump shot from Sam Woods tied things early in the fourth quarter, 32-32. The two teams would trade few baskets down the line as both teams were stout defensively with Bland leading 35-34 with 35 seconds remaining in the game.
Pringle would seal the victory for the Lady ’Jackets as a layup in the final seconds put Kemp over the top, 36-35.
Anthony led the way offensively for the Lady ’Jackets with 11 points, followed by a nine-point effort from Barnett.
The win moves Kemp to 3-4 overall on the 2022-23 season.
