Malakoff High School’s Landen Boswell (from left) and Sydney Hinds show off their gold medals after winning the Class 3A Region II singles tennis titles at Tyler Junior College May 9, where No. 2 seed Boswell defeated Cambell Lynch of Lone Oak May 8 (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2), then toppled Luke Bueno of White Oak May 9 (6-0, 6-0) before beating No. 1 seed Vincent Wong of Queen City May 9 (6-0, 6-1) to win the Regional boys’ singles championship. Hinds (the No. 3 seed) defeated Maddie Alonzo of Pottsboro May 8 (6-0, 6-2), took down Jayci Barnes of Paradise May 8 (6-3, 6-2), then May 9 beat Diana Mojica of Commerce (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) before later that day defeating Abby Lobue of White Oak by an identical score (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) to win the girls’ singles Regional title. Boswell and Hinds advance to the UIL Tennis State Tournament in San Antonio May 15-16, where both Boswell and Hinds have opening Round of 16 byes before the quarterfinals, with the Class 3A boys’ and girls’ singles’ State Championships to be decided May 16 starting at noon.
