Malakoff quarterback Mike Jones, shown during the Tigers’ first game Aug. 25 against West Rusk, ran for a 22-yard touchdown Sept. 1 against Grandview.

GRANDVIEW–The Malakoff Tigers, who are No. 5 in the state in Class 3A, Division 1, took a 48-7 halftime lead over the No. 8 Grandview Zebras Sept. 1 and coasted to their second win of the season, 51-21, while racking up 332 yards rushing for the night.
Jerrion Hall scored first for undefeated Malakoff on a 54-yard run with 10:08 left in the first quarter, which Grandview answered thereafter. Later, Malakoff quarterback Mike Jones ran 22 yards for a touchdown to allow the Tigers to regain the lead at 14-7, followed by Hall adding his second touchdown of the night, this time on an 81-yard jaunt that pushed the Tiger lead to 21-7.
Malakoff added more touchdowns in the second quarter, when Jones hit Kayland Davis with a 14-yard touchdown pass, then Chauncey Hogg got into the act with the Tigers’ fourth touchdown. Davis got a touchdown on defense when he returned an interception for his second score of the night, followed by Jack Hustead, who racked up another Tiger pick-six. That gave Malakoff its 48-7 halftime lead.
Jacob Padron kicked a 42-yard field goal in the second half to account for the Tigers’ 51 points against the Zebras, who have become a regular Malakoff rival since beating the Tigers in the 2018 state championship game. Grandview scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to reduce the blowout margin.
Malakoff next plays Salado in a Sept. 8 non-district neutral site matchup in Waco.
