Ken Vieux went home to join the Lord Aug. 20, 2022. He passed with his wife by his side at Baylor hospital in Dallas. 
Ken strongly believed in his faith and loved his family with his whole heart and was active in each of them until he was no longer able.  
He was born in the Texas panhandle March 27, 1940 to Henri and Nobie Vieux.

Former mayor pleads guilty to child obscenity violations

ATHENS–The former mayor of Athens has plead guilty to federal child obscenity violations in the Eastern District of Texas, U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston announced Aug. 25.
James Monte Montgomery, 64, plead guilty to sending obscene materials to a minor before U.S. Magistrate Judge John D. Love.

Tigers open season with win over West Rusk

The Malakoff Tigers take their season opener over the West Rusk Raiders Aug. 26 at home. The Tigers, behind three touchdowns from Jason Tennyson, were victorious, 28-7 over West Rusk. The win was also the 130th career head coaching win for Malakoff Tigers Athletic Director/Head Coach Jamie Driskell.

James “PeeWee” Lewis McKinney

James “PeeWee” Lewis McKinney, 91, of Tool passed away Aug. 20, 2022. PeeWee was born April 7, 1931 to parents James Edward McKinney and Freddie Mae Gay. 
He married the love of his life, Barbara Jerene Estes April 4, 1953 in Malakoff. Their journey began soon after and had two daughters, Sherrie and Carla. 
James was a caring and doting husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

County lifts burn ban, disaster declaration

HENDERSON COUNTY–Commissioners’ Court of Henderson County approved lifting the drought-related disaster declaration Aug. 23, which the county has been under since late July.
In addition, according to the county’s official Facebook page, County Judge Wade McKinney followed that by directing County Fire Marshal Shane Renberg that McKinney would lift the countywide burn ban that has been in effect since June 21.
