County approves bankruptcy plan for OxyContin maker

ATHENS–Aug. 5, Henderson County Commissioners’ Court voted to accept the proposed bankruptcy plan for Purdue Pharma as well as the execution of the subdivision participation and release form.
Jan. 23, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that a bipartisan coalition of states and other parties reached a $7.4 billion settlement in principle with members of the Sackler family and their company Purdue Pharma for what an attorney general’s office release says was “their instrumental role in creating the opioid crisis.”

Kimberly was known for her warm heart, adventurous spirit and love of travel and fishing. Her vibrant personality and deep love for her family will be remembered always.
Kimberly was preceded in death by her father Clarence Hargis, mother Joy Hollon, brother Timothy Hargis and other loved ones who welcomed her with open arms.

Gary Michael “Mike” Greenhaw, 72, formerly of Streetman passed away peacefully July 28, 2025, in Moore, Okla., surrounded by loved ones.
Born May 8, 1953, in Dallas, Mike was a son of the late William “Bill” Greenhaw and the late Lavena Shotwell Greenhaw.
After attending high school in Mabank, Mike's passion for hard work led him to build a successful career owning and operating G & G Septic Tanks and Construction in Seven Points.

Billy Ray Fuller, Sr.

Billy Ray Fuller, Sr., passed away peacefully July 20, 2025, in Fort Worth, at the age of 85. He was born Aug. 6, 1939, in Evansville, Ind., to Raymond M. Fuller and Estel M. Williams.
Bill grew up in Indiana and graduated from Newburgh High School in 1957. Shortly after, in 1958, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy and promptly became a certified Dental Technician. This led him to serve in the Dental Detachment at MCRD - Parris Island, S.C. His service was marked by Good Conduct and National Defense Service Medals, and he was honorably discharged in 1964.

Three arrested following traffic stop

A July 31 Athens-area traffic stop leads to investigators recovering a large amount of suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, suspected cocaine, several suspected ecstasy pills, THC gummies and a large amount of U.S. currency, according to a release from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Multiple people indicted in deadly truck crash

KAUFMAN COUNTY–A truck driver at the wheel that killed five people on I-20 near Terrell was indicted on multiple charges by a Kaufman County grand jury this past week. 
A company official for the trucking company, Hope Trans, was also indicted for felony forgery. 
The driver, 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, was indicted on five counts of manslaughter and aggravated assault with a weapon.
