Sunrise Point at Cedar Creek Lake joins chamber and hosts business after-hours

Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce members gather to welcome Sunrise Point at Cedar Creek Lake in Malakoff to the chamber with a June 14 ribbon-cutting. Cutting the ribbon is Sunrise Point co-owner Sue Fry-Wigodsky, with co-owner Dr. Ann Wigodsky and General Manager Casey Lee. Sunrise Point is an event venue with private cottages located at 3199 County Road 1708 and can be reached at (903) 904-7500.

 

Former Police Chief faces animal cruelty charge

HENDERSON COUNTY—In a letter from Henderson County Attorney Clint Davis and Henderson County District Attorney Jenny Palmer, they state that the former Caney City Police Chief Charles Gregory will face a charge of cruelty to animals. 
The allegation stems from a single incident that occurred April 8 where it is alleged Gregory picked up a stray dog in the city limits of Trinidad, drove it to the City of Malakoff and abandoned the dog.

Early voting has low turnout

GUN BARREL CITY–Voter turnout for the Gun Barrel City Mayor runoff election is beginning with a crawl. 
Early voting began June 16 and has only garnered 109 votes between the first two days of early voting, as of June 20. Voters are asked to cast their vote between candidates Linda Rankin and incumbent Mayor David Skains. 
Early voting ends Friday, June 24 with election day set for Tuesday, June 28.

Lee joins TVCC women’s basketball as assistant coach

ATHENS–Jashae Lee has joined the coaching staff at Trinity Valley Community College as assistant women’s basketball coach.  
Lee joins the Lady Cardinals after two years with New Mexico Junior College, where she served as assistant coach.
She assisted in a successful season while with the Thunderbirds. After not competing due to COVID during 2020-21, the New Mexico program became the 2022 Region V- WJCAC Conference Champions, compiling a 25-6 season record and an undefeated home record of 13-0.

County certifies fire tanker loan as tax free

HENDERSON COUNTY–Commissioners’ Court of Henderson County adopted a resolution June 7 certifying tax-exempt status of a loan that the Log Cabin Fire Department received to finance a new fire tanker truck.
The volunteer department is utilizing a $220,000 Texas Forest Service grant as a down payment on the $374,087 cost for the Pierce fire truck, Log Cabin Fire Chief Cory Abbe said, with the rest financed through a Simmons Bank 15-year loan with 3.75 percent interest, he said.

Kerens City Council delays electric delivery rate rise

KERENS–Kerens City Council adopted a resolution June 7 to push back by three months Oncor Electric Delivery’s base rate increase request for customers under Kerens’ jurisdiction. 
Oncor, the largest electric delivery company in Texas, states in a news release that the company is seeking a $251 million annual revenue increase over current adjusted rates by filing a May 13 comprehensive base rate increase request with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and with cities in the Oncor service area that have original jurisdiction over the company’s rates.
