Confirmed tornado blows through Athens area

The Athens Steel Building Company suffered the most noted damage during the confirmed EF-2 tornado Nov. 4. 

HENDERSON COUNTY–The National Weather Service (NWS) in Fort Worth, has confirmed two tornadoes during the severe weather event Nov. 4. NWS confirmed an EF-2 tornado with estimated wind speeds of 115 mph. The tornado began south of Malakoff into northeast Athens between 5:35 p.m. and 5:58 p.m., leaving a path of debris and destruction in its wake. The worst damage reported was to the Athens Steel Building located near northeast Loop 7 in northeast Athens. The south end wall of the metal building was pushed inward as well as a missing portion of the roof. Many other businesses such as Dollar General, Texas Car Title & Payday Loan and the Army Navy Store sign suffered damage along with numerous residential homes. Shingles, branches and entire trees littered the roadways in and around Athens, calling for neighbors to help neighbors remove branches and trees from homes and roadways. 
The City of Athens issued a plea to residents to “stay off the roads if possible until trees, debris and downed lines can be cleaned up.” The city also stated that several roads were closed or blocked because of storm damage. The City of Athens continued cleanup efforts into the morning of Nov. 5 stating that Oncor crews were working to restore power in some areas of the city. 
Another tornado was also confirmed to be an EF-3 tornado with estimated wind speeds of 160 mph which trekked through western Lamar County into southeast Oklahoma between 4:19 p.m. and 4:46 p.m. 
The NWS says these preliminary reports could still be revised and that ratings could be updated if additional reports are received.
