Howdy, Northern Lights

The night of Nov. 11 marked the highly unusual, if not historical, appearance across the Cedar Creek Lake-area sky of Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. The nocturnal blazing vista, usually contained to Canada, came to Texas because of a powerful solar storm that had Americans in warmer climates clicking their cameras. This photo was taken just before 10 p.m. Veterans Day night from across a pasture in Malakoff during what the National Weather Service deemed a perfectly clear sky, with other reports of the famous lights coming in from Kemp. The Monitor witnessed at least two drones launch from and fly around Malakoff, likely in hopes of catching the fading beams of history. Another showing was expected Nov. 12.
