Payne Springs Fire Rescue (PSFR) documents the daytime search efforts for a 22-year-old kayaker who had capsized May 16 on Cedar Creek Lake near Peninsula Point Terrance on the western edge of Payne Springs, with that person’s body recovered by divers May 17, according to PSFR.
PAYNE SPRINGS-A 22-year-old person was found dead at Cedar Creek Lake May 17, nearly a day after the person’s kayak capsize had been reported to Payne Springs Fire Rescue (PSFR), the fire-rescue department announced on social media that day.
According to PSFR, the department’s volunteers responded to Peninsula Point Terrace in the western area of Payne Springs for the report of a 22-year-old subject who had capsized a kayak on Cedar Creek Lake. The caller reported that the subject had gone underwater and had not resurfaced.
PSFR Chief 1 arrived on scene and found a civilian boat already searching the area, the fire-rescue department said. Mutual aid was immediately requested from Gun Barrel City Fire and Long Cove Fire for additional rescue boats, PSFR said. Tow Boat US Cedar Creek also responded and offered assistance, with a PSFR firefighter boarding their vessel to assist in search operations, along with a Texas game warden who also responded to the scene, according to the fire-rescue department.
PSFR said crews searched the area both visually and utilizing side-scan sonar until approximately 10 p.m. the night of May 16 before suspending operations for the night. Then, on the morning of May 17, Texas game wardens returned to the scene with boats and dive teams to continue the search, PSFR said, along with the fire-rescue departments own personnel responding back to assist as needed. Then, at about 10:20 a.m. May 17, the subject was recovered by the dive team, PSFR said.
“This marks the second drowning incident on the lake that PSFR has responded to already this year,” the fire-rescue department said. “We strongly encourage everyone enjoying the lake to wear a properly fitted life jacket or flotation device at all times while on the water. A simple precaution can save a life.”
Other agencies PSFR credited in assisting with the incident included Gun Barrel City Fire, Long Cove Fire, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, UT Health EMS, Tow Boat US Cedar Creek and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office
