LOG CABIN–An accident involving a pickup truck, and three motorcycles resulted in two fatalities on August 18.
The fatal crash happened shortly after 8 PM on the bridge between Log Cabin and Payne Springs.
According to a Log Cabin Fire Department Facebook posting, Fire Chief 1 was first on scene and found the motorcycles and a pickup truck, all with major damage. Command was established and the roadway shut down.
According to the post, Caney City Fire Department was requested to assist with traffic control. Engine 1 arrived at the scene and began patient care of the driver of the pickup truck. Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) identified the driver to be William Coker of Eustace. One of the motorcyclists, identified by DPS as John Berkley of Athens, was immediately declared deceased on site.
A second motorcyclist, identified by DPS as Levi Lott of Tyler, was found to have fallen between the bridge structures and into the lake, according to authorities.  Long Cove Fire Department and Trinidad Fire Department boats were requested to assist in his search. Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Game Warden’s also launched their boats to assist in the search.
A Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden recovered the body around 11 a.m. Monday at Cedar Creek Reservoir. DPS conducted an accident investigation while crews maintained road closure. Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) assisted in cleanup by bringing out a street sweeper and crew to assist in clearing the debris. Once the survey and initial investigation were concluded and the roadway cleaned, crews opened the roadway for regular use. All units were cleared back into service at 1:30 a.m.
Departments that responded include Caney City Fire Department, Long Cove Fire Department, Trinidad Fire Rescue, UT Health East Texas EMS, Texas Department of Public Safety, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Game Wardens, Log Cabin Police Department, Payne Springs Police Department and Eustace Police Department.
The DPS preliminary investigation indicates Vehicle 1 (Coker) was traveling north on SH 198. Vehicles 2 (Berkley), 3 (Cody Jordan of Chandler) and 4 (Lott) were motorcycles that were traveling south on SH 198. Vehicle 1 drove on the wrong side of the roadway striking Vehicle 2. Vehicle 3 was struck by debris and then Vehicle 1 struck Vehicle 4 causing the driver to be thrown over the bridge into the water. This investigation is ongoing, and no additional information is available.
