TRINIDAD–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats were in a dogfight with the Trinidad Lady Trojans in the first set of Sept. 3’s volleyball game before pulling away in the final two sets for a 3-0 victory.
During the first set, an Allison Torres kill for Trinidad gave the Lady Trojans an 18-16 advantage. An errant spike by Kerens’ Rylee Spivey allowed Trinidad to take a 19-16 lead. Later, three consecutive Spivey aces tied the first set at 22. Kayla Gonzales’ kill put Kerens ahead 23-22, another Spivey ace padded the Lady ‘Cat lead at 24-22 and another ace by Spivey allowed Kerens to secure the first set, 25-22.
After Abby Combs of Kerens gave her team a 4-1 second-set lead, Trinidad tied the set and went up 5-4 on two consecutive Kerens fault points. Torres of Trinidad scored an ace to put the Lady Trojan lead at 7-5, then a Kerens double hit moved that margin to 8-5. With Sarah Massey serving, Kerens retook the lead, while two Blair Blue kills and an ace from Blue put it at 18-11, Kerens. Further on, Combs had two-straight aces for a 23-14 Kerens lead, then Combs ended the second set at 25=14 with a kill.
Two Blue aces and a double dose of Spivey kills helped put Kerens ahead 8-1 in the third set, prompting a Trinidad timeout. Afterward, M’Kyria Williams had an ace to build the Lady ‘Cat lead to 10-1. Spivey had a crushing kill to make it 23-9, Kerens, in the third set. Spivey had yet another kill for point 24, then Blue’s kill ended the third set at 25-10, along with the match.
