Seven Points creates Senior Citizen Coalition
SEVEN POINTS–Seven Points City Council met April 10 at the temporary city hall, located at 715 South Seven Points Blvd. (State Highway 274).
The temporary council chamber was created and built within a matter of days by Mayor Keith Betts and friends. The council was able to carry on business as usual in the chamber.
Council member Valeri Bahm approached the council for the creation of a committee called, “Senior Citizen Coalition.”
The committee idea came to Bahm when an elderly couple met their demise in their home. They did not have family members in the area to check on them, when they succumbed to natural causes therefore they were in the home for several days. Bahm stated, “if someone in the city had been checking on them the outcome could have been very different,” So she and Police Chief Raymond Wennerstrom decided to be the voice for the elderly and disabled that do not have family nearby.
Bahm is working with Wennerstrom to have officers drop by and visit those who are home alone, whether elderly or disabled. Bahm is also working with other organizations to help with visits and plans to visit with churches to help out with visits, gifts or support. Betts said, “Hopefully this will be a role model for other communities.”
