Malakoff breezes by Winona after first-set struggle

MALAKOFF–Malakoff High School’s volleyball team faced Winona Oct. 14 in District action, falling behind in the first set before winning it later, then taking the next two sets by lopsided scores.
In that first set, Winona led 4-0 then Malakoff roared back to tie twice, the last time at 5-5 on a Bree Tinney kill. De’Mariya Singleton’s kill made it 10-7 Winona, then Cameryn Cheek’s kill brought Malakoff closer at 11-8. Eventually, Malakoff tied the first set at 12-12.
Then, a Cate Powers ace put Malakoff up 13-12. Another Tinney kill had it 14-12 in favor of Malakoff, yet Winona tied the set at 14-14. Then, Tinney had another kill and Cheek tallied two aces, allowing Malakoff to lead 17-14. Winona then went ahead two separate times, leading to a Malakoff timeout with their team down 21-19.
After that, Winona extended their lead to 23-19. That’s when Malakoff made their move. Tinney recorded a kill, Duran had two aces then two points from Avery Austin allowed Malakoff to prevail in the first set 25-23.
In the second set, a Duran ace had Malakoff ahead 5-2, an Austin kill had it 6-2, another Duran ace moved it to 7-2, a Singleton kill put it at 10-2, an Austin ace made it 11-3, a Cheek kill had Malakoff up 12-3. Powers had two more aces later in the set, with Hailey Hollensworth adding one of her own. Malakoff won the second set 25-9.
Malakoff then finished off the match by winning the third set 25-4.
