MABANK—The Mabank Panthers hosted the Van Vandals Feb. 3 for a boys’ basketball District matchup.
Mabank began with a 7-0 lead thanks to a 3-pointer from Luke Carter, a pair of free throws from Jayden Colin and a field goal from Cullen McFaul.
As the Panthers led 10-4, the Vandals went on a 6-3 stretch to trail 13-10 with 1:24 remaining in the first quarter. Mabank got a 3-pointer with five seconds left on the clock to lead 16-10 after the first quarter.
Carter Sims opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer for the 19-10 Panther lead before Van cut it to 19-12 with free throws from Seth Long.
The Panthers went on a 15-5 run to extend their lead to 34-17 with 2:08 left until halftime. Sims had 11 points in that stretch.
At 34-18, McFaul had a basket to make it 36-18 before Van trailed 36-20 at the break with a basket.
Mabank led 38-22 before a 3-pointer from Van's Kale Carter cut it to 38-25 with 6:08 left in the third quarter. Four straight points from the Panthers built their lead to 42-25 with 2:52 left in the third period.
At 48-30, Tiler Williams cut it to 48-32 with his Vandal basket at the 1:05 mark of the third. Luke Carter had a hoop to give Mabank the 50-32 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Mabank never looked back in the final period as they defeated Van, 69-48.
The Panthers resumed District play at Lindale Feb. 6.
