Rock Stanley left for a hike on Mt. Charleston at 5:45 a.m., Aug. 23 and never returned.

ATHENS–The body of a missing hiker from Athens Rock Stanley, 75, was found around 12:30 p.m. Sept. 17. His body was found by Red Rock Search and Rescue 1,200 feet southeast of Lee Peak, just off of the Charleston Loop Trail. Red Rock Search and Rescue (RRSAR) has been involved in the search for Stanley since he was reported missing. Stanley’s granddaughter Courtney stated that they are awaiting formal examination results for more details on his death.
Stanley was an experienced hiker who has made the hike on Mount Charleston in Las Vegas, Nev. for the past 30 years. Stanley who was a retired U.S. Marine and high school coach, set out on his trek Aug. 23 and had not been seen since. RRSAR began Aug. 28 with a boots-on-the-ground search followed by two air searches by the Civil Air Patrol. Multiple independent searches were conducted along with Search Dogs 24/7, search drones and Las Vegas Police Department.
Stanley normally hikes with a partner but this time opted to hike solo. Other hikers, who noticed him said that he was asking people, “Where are we? Where are you?” They said he seemed confused and noticed his legs were shaking. Stanley recently started a new medication, which Rangers say could have affected him due to the change in elevation.
Stanley and his wife Karen had been staying at The Retreat at Mount Charleston. When Stanley didn’t return from his hike Aug. 23, Karen reported him missing. Stanley sent a text to his son the night of Aug. 23 saying he was lost in the woods and trying to backtrack. Family was able to reach him early in the morning Aug. 24 when he stated he was trying to get some help.
RRSAR Commander Craig McVeay said, “information provided by the Stanley family and Metro led searchers to the man’s location."
