KERENS–The Kerens girls’ and boys’ Lady ‘Cats and Bobcats basketball teams were beaten handily by Frankston in their Feb. 3 District 19-2A action, losing 54-17 and 54-20, respectively.
The Lady ‘Cats finished their season with the loss. The Bobcats remain in the hunt for a playoff berth and complete their regular season Feb. 10 against Cayuga.
Versus the Frankston Maidens, the Lady ‘Cats fell behind 8-0 before Tiani Hall (who accounted for 14 of Kerens’ 17 points in the game) scored a basket with 3:32 left in the first period. Blair Blue drove the lane, made a bucket and was fouled with 2:17 remaining in the opening quarter, with her free throw bringing Kerens closer at 8-5. Later in the first period, another Hall basket kept Kerens within 10-7.
Frankston took a 19-8 advantage into halftime, after which Hall hit a three-pointer to make the score 20-11, Maidens. Following that, Frankston went on a 17-0 run to take a 37-11 lead at the end of the third period. Hall had two more three-pointers in the fourth period.
In the subsequent game against the Frankston Indians, the Bobcats trailed 27-2 at halftime. Muziq Gunnell nailed a long three-pointer early in the second half to get Kerens within 27-5. Lane Lynch added another three-pointer halfway through the third period. In the final period, Nehemiah Massey scored four points, with James Easley, Trayton Spivey and Bobby Williams adding two points apiece.
