Donald Gene Garrett, 78, of Payne Springs, passed away April 20, 2026. He was born in Dallas Oct. 28, 1947, to parents E.C. and Shirley (Boren) Garrett.
Don’s education journey started at H. Grady Spruce High School in Dallas and continued at the United States Marine Boot Camp in San Diego, Calif., from which he graduated in 1966 as part of Platoon 206. These experiences shaped the man who was both hard-headed and stubborn yet deeply loving—a protector of his family and a steady, calming presence to friends.

Fred Carter, a beloved pillar of the Mabank community, passed away April 10, 2026, at the age of 81. Born May 23, 1944, to Eugene and Louise Carter, Fred lived a life defined by service, generosity and an unwavering love for his family, friends and the people in the town he called home.

Homicide in the City of Tool

TOOL‑ Lieutenant Jason Lee of the Tool Police Department released the following statement April 27.
The Tool Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred on the evening of April 24, 2026.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the City of Tool regarding a reported burglary in progress. The officer arrived within minutes of the call and made contact at the scene.
