MABANK– The Mabank Panthers and the Canton Eagles clashed at Panther Stadium Sept. 15 for a non-district matchup on the gridiron.
A 3-yard touchdown run from Nathan Parker got Canton on the board first, 7-0, in the first quarter.
With 9:35 in the second quarter, after facing 3rd-and-long in their own territory and a 4th down, the Panthers would have the ball at the Eagles’ 6-yard line. However, Mabank would settle for a field goal by Noah Romero and trailed 7-3.
When Canton forced a turnover with under two minutes until the break, Kyler Howeth intercepted Parker with 13 seconds to Canton’s 46, but time ran out and the Eagles led 7-3 at the intermission.
Early in the third quarter, Brayden Norrell picked up a fumble recovery and on the ensuing drive, Avery Wilson found his way into the end zone for a 15-3 Eagle lead after Reed Vannorsdel recorded two points.
Late in the third quarter, the Panther defense recorded an interception, but the ball was lost on the return and Canton recovered it in their own territory.
With 10:04 left to play, Carson French picked up a 22-yard TD run and it was 22-3.
With under five minutes, Hagen Tijerina got across the goal line and Mabank trailed 22-9.
Nathan Whitlock would ice the game for Canton as he recorded a touchdown catch and the Eagles would go on to defeat Mabank by the final score of 30-9.
Mabank, now 0-3, stays home Sept. 22 when they welcome Waxahachie Life.
