KEMP—Five Kemp High School athletes gathered at the KHS Auditorium to sign their letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers April 14.
The athletes were Lezmailin Hernandez, who signed to play soccer at Trinity Valley Community College, Jared Minzenmayer, who signed to play football at Doane University, Elias Delgado, who signed for football at Westminster College, Briana Benitez, who signed for soccer at Cedar Valley and Tenilee Anthony, also signing for Cedar Valley for both basketball and soccer.
Hernandez was the All-Tournament MVP at the Westwood-Palestine tournament, where the Lady Jackets were co-champs, was named first team all-district and academic all-district. Benitez was named second team all-district, academic all-district and was the team’s leading scorer.
Anthony was the team’s assist leader and the utility player of the year in soccer and was named first-team all-district and recorded over 1,000 career points in basketball. She was academic all-district in both sports.
Minzenmayer and Delgado were a key part of the Yellowjacket football team during the first year of head coach B.J. Rider. The Yellowjackets battled numerous injuries this past season and went 2-8 with a 1-5 district mark, finishing in sixth place. Their two victories were shutout wins at home over Rice, 34-0, on Sept. 16 and Eustace, 54-0, to close the season November 4.
