Kemp sweeps Eustace in doubleheader

EUSTACE–The Kemp Yellowjackets’ basketball squads arrived at Kirk Gymnasium Jan. 19 for district clashes with the Eustace Bulldogs, with Kemp winning both contests.
During the girls’ game, Kemp led first at 4-0, before Eustace got on the board with two free throws by Sarah Ross. A Toni Hawkins 3-point play and one free throw by Emma Bailey built the lead to 8-2.
Ross’ 3-pointer trimmed it to 8-5 before Makayla Millel’s charity shot made it 9-5, Kemp. Eustace trailed 9-7 going into the second quarter with Aurora Powell’s field goal.
The Lady Jackets opened the second quarter with six straight points and led 15-7. Heagen Manken’s field goal with 3:55 left until halftime was the only Lady Bulldog basket of the period as Bailey, Hawkins and Danica Barnett combined for five straight points to have Kemp lead 20-9 at the break. 
Powell had five straight points to open the third quarter and Eustace trailed 20-14. Hawkins’ field goal made it 22-14 before field goals by Ross and Paige Quigg cut the score to 22-18 to close the third quarter.
With the Lady Bulldogs trailing 29-23, one free throw apiece by Hawkins and Barnett made it 31-23.
At 32-24, Eustace picked up a 3-pointer at the 1:46 mark of the fourth period to trail 32-27. Bailey’s ensuing free throw made it 33-27 and Manken’s field goal cut it to 33-29 after a timeout with 53 seconds left, but that was the final score as Kemp defeated Eustace.
In boys’ action, the Yellowjackets led 4-0 to begin the game. Rhett Dyer scored first for Eustace and the Bulldogs trailed 4-2. Kemp used an 18-0 run to allow them to go up 22-2.
The Bulldogs trailed 25-6 late in the first period before Jackson Young’s free throw gave Kemp the 26-6 lead at the end of the initial quarter. In the second period, Kemp’s Huston Cromer, Tanner Huth and Jose Morales built the Yellowjacket lead to 32-6.
Elijah Griffin and Cooper Leslie contributed six of the next eight Eustace points to cut it to 34-12, but Kemp went on to lead 46-18 at halftime.The Yellowjackets kept their foot on the gas pedal to lead 70-27 after the third quarter and went on to pick up the 85-39 road win.
