KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats and Lady Cats, both of which made the playoffs this past season, each have one player who has received District 18-2A superlative honors, with the Kerens boys’ coach also being noted.
Lady Cat sophomore Lyrik Gunnell is the District 18-2A Offensive Player of the Year while sophomore Kaylynn Blackmon, freshman Lexi Blackmon and sophomore Nevaeh Eastman are First Team All-District. Kerens junior Hayden Hawkins and senior Sarah Massey are Second Team All-District, and sophomore Karla Orta and freshman Peyton Priddy are on the Honorable Mention list for the Lady Cats.
For the Kerens boys, Bobcats coach Gerald Hurd is District 18-2A Co-Coach of the Year, sharing that honor with Mildred coach Lance Key. Kerens senior Muziq Gunnell is the District 18-2A Most Valuable Player.
Kerens boys’ basketball 18-2A First Teamers include seniors Bryce Lincoln and Layton Bunch along with junior Isaiah Carter. Kerens boys’ Second Team All-District players are seniors Leland Combs and Jachi Rooks.
Honorable Mention for 18-2A boys’ basketball from Kerens are freshman Ja’Darrius Peters and sophomore DaMajion Allen. Academic All-District for the Kerens boys are Carter and Combs.
