KERENS–The Kerens Lady ‘Cats took the final two sets to beat the Fruitvale Lady Bobcats 3-1 in Sept. 12 non-district action, which gave Kerens a three-match win streak.
Kerens raced out of the gate and took a 12-6 first-set lead, which forced Fruitvale to call a timeout. Afterward, Rylee Spivey notched two separate kills to put Kerens up 18-11 and 19-14, then Spivey recorded an ace to let Kerens rule 20-14. Olivia Holt’s kill put Kerens in front 21-15, then a Fruitvale double hit gave Kerens a 22-16 advantage. A Fruitvale kill attempt fell out of bounds, increasing the Kerens margin to 23-16, followed soon by Fruitvale serving into the net, which added another Kerens point (a 24-17 Lady ‘Cat lead). A Holt ace ended the first set at 25-17, Kerens.
The second set required extra points for Fruitvale to prevail. After Fruitvale took a large lead, Kerens tied the set at 18 with Tiani Hall serving. Fruitvale again went up 22-19, then Spivey chipped away at Fruitvale’s set supremacy with a Kerens kill (22-20, Fruitvale) before Fruitvale retook charge at 24-20. Kerens tied the second set at 24, then an Ella Engel kill gave the Lady ‘Cats a 25-24 advantage. Needing a two-point margin past 25 points to win the second set, Fruitvale and Kerens traded ties before Fruitvale came out on top, 29-27.
Kerens roared out to an 8-2 third-set lead on a Spivey kill, and another such statistic allowed Kerens to reign 10-3. A Holt block put another point up for Kerens, who now led 12-3 and which caused a Fruitvale timeout. Eventually, a Hall kill gave Kerens a third-set win at 25-8.
During the fourth set, Abby Combs recorded an ace for a 4-2 Kerens lead, Spivey had another kill for an 11-10 Lady ‘Cat advantage, a Holt kill gave Kerens the edge at 14-13 and then a Spivey ace increased the Kerens margin to 15-13. After the fourth set was knotted at 17, a Holt kill gave Kerens command at 18-17 before the Lady ‘Cats finished off Fruitvale, 25-18.
