Mabank rallies, downs Brownsboro for first win

MABANK–The Mabank Panthers rallied for their first victory of the 2022 season over the Brownsboro Bears at home Sept. 9.
The Panthers won a back-and-forth battle with the Bears as their offense put the final nail in the coffin in a 42-41 victory over Brownsboro.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead on a 41-yard touchdown pass before the Panthers answered on a 22-yard run to tie the game 6-6.
Mabank took their first lead of the game on a 28-yard run to take a 12-6 lead after an unsuccessful two-point conversion.
The Bears took the lead back heading into the second quarter with a seven-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion as they went ahead 14-12.
The Bears increased their lead over the Panthers on a 21-yard touchdown pass as they led 21-12 at halftime.
Mabank opened the second half with a 36-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 21-19. Brownsboro would answer with a 21-yard run to increase their lead to 28-19.
A 22-yard touchdown run for the Panthers once again cut the Bears’ lead to 28-26.
The two teams continued to trade scores as the Bears and Panthers each added five-yard touchdown runs as the Panthers entered the fourth quarter trailing the Bears 35-34.
The Bears’ defense led to offense in the fourth quarter as Brownsboro scored on an interception to make it a 41-34 game.
The Panthers, with the game on the line late, scored on a long 33-yard run and instead of going for the tie, possibly forcing overtime, they went for the win, successfully completing a two-point conversion to finish the comeback, 42-41, over Brownsboro.
The win moves Mabank to 1-1 overall this season after a bye the week of Sept. 2.
The Panthers hit the road for a big rivalry contest against the Canton Eagles (1-2) Sept. 16.
