Kerens comes back to beat Cayuga on Senior Night
KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats staged a second-half comeback on Senior Night against the Cayuga Wildcats Nov. 1, erasing a 13-0 deficit to win their second District 8-2A football game and remain in the hunt for the playoffs.
Kerens, 4-5 for the season overall, got things started in the third quarter when quarterback Muziq Gunnell threw a 24-yard pass to Jachi Rooks. After that, Gunnell ran 4 yards for Kerens’ first touchdown, reducing their deficit to 13-7.
Later, still in the third quarter with the Bobcats just inside midfield in Cayuga territory, Gunnell threw a 31-yard pass to Malaki Williams to the Cayuga 16-yard line. Next, Gunnell ran 11 yards for a first down. Bobcat running back Nehemiah Massey capped off that drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 13-13 (the point-after failed).
Kerens went ahead 20-13 in the fourth quarter with a 59-yard touchdown run by D’Mari Payne on third-and-10. Payne ended the night with 82 total yards on the ground on four carries.
In other football action Nov. 1, Kemp fell to Ferris 56-7, Eustace lost at Mineola 56-13 and Trinidad was defeated 67-20 at home against Mount Calm.
