Mabank boys’, girls’ cross country advance to Regionals

The Mabank Panthers boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country teams excel at the 16-4A District meet in Canton Oct. 11. The boys’ team takes home the team championship with the girls finsihing second with both teams advancing to the Regionals Oct. 24 at Joe Pool Lake.

CANTON–The Mabank High School cross country teams had a great day at Canton Oct. 11, the site for the 16-4A district meet. 
The varsity boys used a collective team effort to win the team championship. 
The Panthers were led by sophomores Juan Aguirre in sixth place (17:45) and  Esau Garcia in seventh place (17:54), as well as junior Davis Deatherage, who placed eighth (18:03) to cruise over the competition.  Also running well and completing the team scoring  were Caleb Penney in 13th (18:34) and Pablo Garcia in 14th (18:38). Minh Nguyen also ran well.
The girls’ division was a two-team battle, with Canton edging the Lady Panthers by one point for the team championship.   
Leading the way was sophomore Trista Etheridge placing third overall (13:12), junior Felicity Torres in fourth (13:18), junior Sara Garcia in eighth (13:31), while freshman Ana Lisset Gallegos placed 10th (13:43) and Teagan Etheridge placed 11th (13:46). Camryn McDonald also ran well. 
With their performance, both teams qualified for the Regional II meet Oct. 24 at Joe Pool Lake. 
In the JV girls’ division, freshman Danielle Torres and Ana Ruby Gallegos finished third and fifth, respectively.
