KERENS–The Kerens Bobcats (3-4 in 2023) fell 48-28 to the Cayuga Wildcats Oct. 6 after losing the lead late in the first half.
Kerens tied the game at 8 when quarterback Lane Lynch (who threw four touchdowns) converted a fourth-and-7 pass to Muziq Gunnell for a 35-yard touchdown and added a 2-point conversion. Gunnell had just stopped a Cayuga drive with an interception in Bobcat territory.
Then, the Bobcats went ahead 15-8 early in the second quarter on a 21-yard Mykel Lattimore touchdown reception from Lynch. On the ensuing kickoff, Aaron Spence of Kerens recovered the onside kick at the Cayuga 32-yard line. During the following drive, Lynch completed a desperation fourth-and-14 pass to Lattimore covering 31 yards to the Cayuga 5-yard line, but the Bobcats eventually fumbled the ball away at the 2.
That’s when Cayuga took charge, capping off the 98-yard drive with a 37-yard touchdown run with 4:40 left before halftime. A 2-point conversion gave Cayuga the lead at 16-15, then the Wildcats tacked on a 5-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds before halftime (then converting a 2-pointer) to lead 24-15 at intermission.
Cayuga added a 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 2:01 left in the third quarter to take a 32-15 lead. Lynch and Lattimore (the latter of whom totaled 138 receiving yards) connected again for a 58-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to get Kerens within 32-22, but Cayuga later scored a 9-yard touchdown (and another 2-point conversion) to increase their advantage to 40-22 with 6:15 left in the game.
Lynch threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Gunnell with 5:23 left in the game (the 2-point conversion pass was incomplete) to get Kerens within 40-28, but Cayuga scored another touchdown with 1:51 remaining in the contest (with a 2-point conversion) to total 48 points.
