Military and overseas voters: Register and make a plan to vote

KAUFMAN–With the 2024 Presidential Election fast approaching, the Kaufman County Elections Department would like to remind all active military and overseas voters of their registration and voting options and encourage all voters to make a plan to vote today.  
If you are a voter under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), you have options for how you register and vote in Texas.

Tool discusses senior tax relief

TOOL—During the regular city council meeting for the City of Tool Sept. 19, the council held discussion on homestead exemptions for Tool residents who are 65 years of age or older. Council Member Greg Figueroa stated that he sent out a mailer to Tool citizens recommending a $50,000 homestead exemption for seniors 65 and older. “I’ve analyzed the freeze and also the homestead exemption. The freeze freezes it going forward but it doesn’t give them any relief,” stated Figueroa. Figueroa explained his analysis of the taxes, explaining the financial impact of the tax break.

County approves animal shelter agreement with Athens

HENDERSON COUNTY-Henderson County Commissioners’ Court voted Sept. 24 to approve an interlocal agreement for animal shelter services with the City of Athens.
County Judge Wade McKinney said the agreement comes after “multiple months” of discussion between the County Attorney’s Office and the City of Athens. Assistant County Attorney Kenneth Strawn said the City of Athens will be providing animal shelter services under a five-year agreement which starts Oct. 1.

Harbor Point Road to be closed for reconstruction beginning Oct. 5

GUN BARREL CITY–Beginning Saturday, Oct. 5, HK Contracting will begin Phase I of reconstruction of Harbor Point Rd. 
Reconstruction and paving of Phase 1 will include from Highway (HWY) 334 (Main Street) down 2,300 feet North to the end of Lakeview Elementary property. There will be no through traffic allowed on Harbor Point Road during this time.
This project is taking place during the fall break for Mabank ISD in order to have the least amount of traffic disruption.
