Mayor’s race determined by runoff election

Body

CEDAR CREEK LAKE–The next elected mayor for Gun Barrel City will be determined by a runoff race between incumbent Mayor David Skains and Linda Rankin in six to eight weeks. Voters cast 169 votes for Skains, 197 votes for Rankin and 149 votes for Zachary Kennedy. Gun Barrel City Councilwoman Rita Evans will maintain her position and Council Place 4 will be filled by unopposed candidate Cindy Key. 
In the City of Seven Points, incumbent Mayor Skippy Waters was reelected with a total of 37 votes to challenger, Wanda Nichols 18 votes. 

Republican Club discusses new gun laws, border situation

 MABANK–The Cedar Creek Republican Club discussed new gun laws which are now in effect as well as the ongoing dilemma at the Texas-Mexico border at their regular meeting April 28 at Vetoni’s Restaurant. 
Attendees heard from Henderson County Attorney Clint Davis regarding updates during legislature from Austin.

The Mabank Lady Panthers celebrate their Area championship after 16-2 and 10-0 victories over North Lamar May 6-7 at Winnsboro High School. Mabank will face Pleasant Grove in the Regional quarterfinals May 12-14. Game one is at 6 p.m., Thursday May 12, game two is at 6 p.m., Friday May 13 and game three (if necessary) will take place at 12:30 p.m., Saturday May 14. All games will be played at Winnsboro High School.

Terry Wayne Kimbrell

A graveside service for Terry Wayne Kimbrell, 60, of Mabank, was held May 7, 2022, at Oaklawn Cemetery in Mabank.
Terry passed away May 2, 2022 in Canton.  He was born Jan. 28, 1962 in Dallas to Guy B. and Thelma Lee DeWitt Kimbrell.
He was a Christian by faith. He enjoyed traveling and vacations in the mountains. Terry also enjoyed working. If he was not working, he enjoyed remodeling his house.  
Terry was preceded in death by his father and sister Donna Hukill.

Donald Gee Smith

Body

Donald Gee Smith was born Oct. 24, 1934, in Longview being the only son of Sam B. and Pearl Smith.  
Donald passed away May 3, 2022, at the age of 87.  
He graduated from Wortham High School in 1953, was employed as a Dallas firefighter from 1955 to 1968, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1961 and attended SMU law school from 1963-1965 while working in the fire department.

James R Green passed peacefully May 4, 2022 at his home. He was born Jan. 19, 1926 in Quanah to Randolph Green and Jewel (Richardson) Green.  
He was married to Marilyn Reeves in 1948 in Denton while both were students, he at North Texas State University and she at Texas State College for Women.
James served in WWII and had a long career with the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. After living in several midwestern and eastern U.S. cities he and his family returned to their home state of Texas residing in Tool for 53 years.

Theda Jean Kettler

Theda Jean Kettler, 76, of Mabank passed away May 2, 2022. Theda was born Feb. 4, 1946, in Bellville, Ill. 
She was the baby of the family, with 11 older brothers and sisters. Theda grew to be a hardworking and successful woman who devoted 27 years of her life to serve her country. 
This proud Army Veteran had been stationed in Greece, Germany and Africa under the Vietnam Conflict as the secretary of the Ambassador of the State Department.

Peggy Davidson Whisenant was born Oct. 18, 1933 in Chanute, Kan., a daughter of the late Frank and Mildred Moon Davidson.  
One of five children, Peggy grew up in Chanute where she was a graduate of Chanute High School in 1951.  
After graduating high school, Peggy completed several college business courses in Tulsa, Okla.

Henderson County proclaims May 15-21 as EMS Week

HENDERSON COUNTY–Commissioners’ Court of Henderson County voted May 3 to proclaim May 15-21 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week within the county, lining up with the national celebration during the same time frame.
National EMS Week was first authorized by President Gerald Ford in 1974. The county proclamation calls EMS “a crucial public service.”

Kerens ISD approves solar project payments

KERENS–Kerens ISD trustees voted April 25 to make payments to a financial advisor and law firm for their services to help navigate a tax value limitation agreement pertaining to the Goodalta Solar Project, which is planned to be built in the district.
Sara Leon & Associates (a law firm now known as Leon Alcala) received $37,500, as did Jigsaw School Finance Solutions. The $75,000 total of the two payments had been reconciled with a budget amendment approved earlier in the meeting.
