Henderson County calls for closer look at Texas data centers

Speakers expressed their concerns and outright opposition to data center construction in Henderson County during the May 12 commissioners’ court meeting, fearing quality of life changes and stretching resources. The court adopted a resolution that day calling for tighter regulations and more scrutiny of the large-scale construction of facilities such as data centers, as well as urging the state legislature top give its political subdivisions of counties and cities more control over them.

County involved in lawsuit over Lake Palestine development

ATHENS–Following a Sept. 16 executive session regarding litigation with Chill Labs LLC and the Lake Towns at Lake Palestine subdivision, located in Precinct 4, Henderson County Commissioners’ Court approved the County Attorney’s Office to represent Henderson County in the suit, as well as extending the temporary restraining order to Oct. 21.

Henderson County terminates fire marshal’s employment

ATHENS–Aug. 26, Henderson County Commissioners’ Court, following a 1.5-hour executive session, unanimously voted to terminate the appointment and employment of the then-fire marshal, Laura Good, and to appoint Mitch Pate as the interim county fire marshal.
Precinct 2 Commissioner Scott Tuley motioned to take that action, seconded by Precinct 1 Commissioner Wendy Spivey. There was no further discussion about the termination, which was followed by the interim appointment immediately before adjournment of the marathon meeting.

County approves bankruptcy plan for OxyContin maker

ATHENS–Aug. 5, Henderson County Commissioners’ Court voted to accept the proposed bankruptcy plan for Purdue Pharma as well as the execution of the subdivision participation and release form.
Jan. 23, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that a bipartisan coalition of states and other parties reached a $7.4 billion settlement in principle with members of the Sackler family and their company Purdue Pharma for what an attorney general’s office release says was “their instrumental role in creating the opioid crisis.”

County to contest corporate groundwater wells

HENDERSON COUNTY–At the June 10 meeting of the Henderson County Commissioners’ Court, speakers turned out to protest the proposed drilling of 22 groundwater wells in eastern Henderson County between Moore Station and Coffee City by private companies with a Dallas address that plan to extract more than 5 billion gallons of water per year, which the court opposes.
