Payne Springs Fire Rescue responds to car fire

Volunteers of Payne Springs Fire Rescue (PSFR) are alerted to a vehicle fire on Clear Creek Road during the morning hours of April 4. PSFR Engine 1 and Tanker 1 arrived to find a car that had been burning for sometime with no one in the area. The engine crew extinguished the fire and returned to service. The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this incident.

Randall Mays removed from death row

HENDERSON COUNTY–Randall Mays, 64 who was convicted to death in the killing of Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Tony Ogburn and Paul Habelt in 2008, was removed from death row March 27, by a Texas Appeals Court.   
Mays sentence was reformed to life in prison without the possibility of parole, after the court applied a current legal definition of intellectual disability.

Kerens ISD approves buying five buses

KERENS—Kerens ISD (KISD) school board members voted March 25 to approve an agreement to purchase five new buses, one of which will be used by the district’s Special Education department.
KISD Director of Student Services and Operations Brad Atkeisson said four buses cost $135,000 apiece while the Special Education bus costs $133,500. Superintendent Martin Brumit explained to the board that the district plans to pay off a loan so that the district does not accrue any interest.

County approves road deal with energy storage facility

HENDERSON COUNTY—Henderson County Commissioners’ Court voted March 26 to approve a special road use indemnity agreement and permit for an energy storage facility north of Athens.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Chuck McHam explained that the request deals with Tanzanite Energy Storage LLC for County Roads 3718 and 3720, located in his precinct. McHam said County Road 3720 is the part of Cream Level Road just north of State Loop 7 in Athens and that the facility is to be located along County Road 3718.
