Family of nine loses home in fire

Fire Departments arrived to the home to find a detached garage, carport and a single-family home on fire along with two vehicles.

The volunteers of Payne Springs Fire Rescue respond to a car and school bus collision on State Highway 198 and Pin Oak Dr. by the bridge to Caney City Jan. 7. Units arrived to find an SUV crashed in the rear of the bus with heavy damage to the SUV. There were 30 young students and a driver on the bus and just the driver in the SUV. Only minor injuries to the students, none were transported by EMS. The driver of the car refused treatment or transport. The driver of the bus was transported with what appeared to be minor injuries.

Officer charged with possession of child pornography

HENDERSON COUNTY—According to a press release provided by Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse, the Henderson County Crimes Against Children Task Force received information in reference to child pornography being shared on the internet. The task force began an investigation and was able to identify Cody Burris who was a Eustace Police Officer to be the suspect of the investigation. 
The task force learned through the investigation that Burris had gained some images while on duty through an online application. 

UT Health welcomes first baby of 2025

UT Health Athens welcomes its first baby of the new year when Jiovanni Adrian Manqueros was born to Erica Guzman and Adrian Manqueros at 4:56 a.m. Jan. 1.  He weighed 8 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces and measured 22 inches long. “We are so truly blessed having a healthy baby,” Guzman said. “We thank the staff at UT Health Athens for giving an outpouring of love and support for our family.”

Water district mourns loss of former director

CEDAR CREEK LAKE–The East Cedar Creek Fresh Water Supply District’s (ECCFWSD) Board of Directors met Dec. 18 and discussed the Dec. 2 passing of former board director Ted Bayless, who served on the board from Nov. 2012 until he resigned in Feb. 2024.
Bayless was elected as the board treasurer in Nov. 2016. Bill Goheen, who is the current board treasurer and former general manager for the district, made comments that were posted on the ECCFWSD website.
